THE ART OF DOWSING EXPLAINED
Compiled by Philip Gardner
What is dowsing
Dowsing is used as a form of divination to receive guidance or answers to questions that can’t be answered by ones rational thought processes or five senses.
Dowsing is a golden thread that connects and runs through all cultures, religions and belief systems and has been practiced throughout the millennia. Dowsing is a tool that allows direct intuitive communication with your Higher self and the Universal mind.
How does dowsing work?
The movements of the dowsing rods are a physical indicator of existing intuitive knowledge. The body acts as a receiver and uses the movements of the dowsing rods to amplify this information. Scientists call the movement of the rods ideo-muscular responses, controlled by intuition.
These movements occur automatically as one’s body senses the surrounding subtle energy. It is believed that the practise of dowsing can lead to the development of one’s intuitive nature.
Uses of Dowsing:
Dowsing makes the world of energy measurable, alive and tangible to all who use it.
Basic Dowsing Tips:
Dowsing requires both rational and intuitive thinking. You have to ask the right question, which requires left-brain functioning, then switchover to the right-brain (intuitive) mode of thinking to search for the answer. Asking the right question is important.
Make sure that your question can only be understood in one way because your intuition understands things literally. If you ask an ambiguous question, you will receive an ambiguous answer.
Don’t attempt to guess the answer or have any attachment to the answer as this may influence the answer according to what you want it to be. It is also important to establish a meditative state in order to receive your answer.

Uses of Dowsing:
- Dowsing can be used to measure a person’s energy field, or the energy-field of a crystal.
- Healers use dowsing to assist in patient diagnosis (i.e. the state of energy centres and the selection of remedies).
- Measurement of the earth’s energy lines and finding geopathic stress areas in one’s house is another way in which dowsing can be used.
- It can also be used to measure the electromagnetic radiation fields of electronic devices such as cellular phones, TVs and computers.
- One can dowse for ‘yes’ and ‘no’ questions that require to be answered.
- It is used by certain industries to locate underground water and minerals.
- Dowsing can be useful for finding lost objects.

How to Dowse
Getting Started: Using Your Dowsing Rods
Holding one dowsing rod in each hand, bend your arms at the elbows, keeping the rods parallel to the ground. This is referred to as the search position (A). For most dowsers ‘yes’ is open (B) and ‘No’ or ‘found’ position is crossed (C).
Training Your Subconscious Responses
The next step is to programme your subconscious mind to respond in a certain way by communicating with it. To do this,
position your rods in ‘search’ mode. Ask the rods to give you a ‘yes’ answer. Show the rods what you want them to do by
gently twisting your wrists outwards (B). Do this several times. Then ask the rods to give you a ‘no’ or ‘found’ answer and
gently twist your wrists inwards (C). Repeat this exercise several times.

Getting Started
- Compile all the information available that is necessary for the question or object.
- Decide on the correct question to be asked.
- Visualise your question as clearly as possible.
- Begin with the rods in the search position.
- Try to exclude your conscious mind while allowing your intuition to access the answer to your question.
- Have no expectations or attachment to the answer.
Practice Exercises
- Measure a person’s energy field. The rods will move to the ‘yes’ position when you reach the perimeter of their field.
- Have your subject try smudging, meditation, yoga, Reiki, Tai Chi or some other uplifting activity and then re-measure their field. Note the results.
- Measure a person’s energy field while they are focusing on a positive thought or emotion, then re-measure while they are focusing on a negative thought or emotion. Note how thought and emotion can affect the energy field.
- Measure the energy-field of your subject and get them to visualise their aura growing bigger, stronger and brighter, then re-measure their aura. Note how visualisation or intention works.
- Have someone else hide an object in the house and try to find it. Think about what this tells you about your intuition.
- Measure the electromagnetic fields of your cellphone, TV and computer. Contemplate the results.
